Umayyad Grand Mosque (Photography)

One of the Largest and oldest Mosques in the World. It was a Pagan Temple dedicated to Baal Hadad, at the 4th century A.D Roman Emperor Constantine I destroyed the temple and built a Church dedicated to John the Baptist and at the 7th century A.D the Islamic Caliph Al-Walid I converted the church to a mosque and expanded it to its current architecture.

In my opinion this could be described as the national mosque in Syria, its a huge mosque and its right in middle of the hustle and bustle in Damascus.
The mosque is beautiful, and all around it there are small cobbled streets with tiny shops selling everything imaginable, I enjoyed many walks around these small lanes.

the Mosque itself can be visited, but there are very strict rules and regulations and these are posted on a notice outside of the mosque.

    Hello Rima,
!Thank you for the additional info
yep it could be described as such, the entire ancient Damascus is a beautiful place, i wish they cared about it more, every time i go it seems to change somehow to the worst, and walking in the narrow alleys is now nearly impossible because of all those cars, but still love it tho

    خلّيك مصدوم :p
